Bill Matthys for DeWitt County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1
William (BILL) MATTHYS has been a teacher and principal in Texas since 1975. He was a campus
principal in Cuero for eight years until his retirement from full-time employment in 2002. From 2002 until
June, 2010, he was a half-day teacher at Cuero High School.
Matthys has served as a board member for Dewitt County Habitat for Humanity and as vice-president of
the Cuero Cultural and Heritage Foundation. He is a past president of the Cuero Lions Club and was a
board member and president of the Cuero Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. He is presently
serving as a City Councilman.
In explaining his interest in becoming a Justice of the Peace in DeWitt County, Matthys said," I have
worked for 35 years in the public schools of Texas as a principal and teacher. I feel that this background
has prepared me to serve well in the position of Justice of the Peace because I have had a great deal of
experience in those years listening objectively to disputes between people for the purpose of resolving
conflicts. Through that experience, I have gained a degree of maturity and sound judgment which I have
put to work as a member of the Cuero City Council for the past 20 months, and I would rely on it to serve
the people of our county as well. I have also taken 27 college hours in law coursework, some in
preparation for my certification as a school administrator and some in preparation for certification as a
licensed paralegal in Texas. These courses have given me cause to study our judicial system and the
laws of our state and have required me to conduct research into judicial opinions to see how the laws are
applied by our courts. I am eager to put my human relations skills and my maturity and judgment to work
for the people of DeWitt County as their Justice of the Peace."
